A 3G network means 3rd generation services.
means you can download at a higher speed than the traditional network, normally 3G starts out at around 384kb/s (in the UK we have HSPA which is up to 7.2Mb/s now). 3G also gives you the facility to do video calling, streaming video and TV, voice calls are also a higher quality on 3G. I don't know which operators have 3G in the US, all 5 of our networks in the UK have 3G services.
