You need to activate the iPhone to use any part of it. If you don't, then the only screen you can get to is the “slide for emergency call” screen.
the 3G iPhone will come to Canada (Rogers). The first generation iPhone will have AppStore, by the way. (which then you need to buy off of ebay, then unlock it). The 3G iPhone will require in-store activation. Whether this applies to Rogers, no one knows (but probably, since it's applying to every other country.mainly cause it's cheaper now).
