It's automatic process. You'll know its working when you plug your phone into the computer and the little charger icon comes on, on your phone. However, depending on your computers voltage, it may not produce enough “juice” to charge your phone.
all computers/laptops are the same. My Blackberry actually displays a message if the laptop/computer I plug it into doesn't have enough juice to charge the phone.
