You can put your sim card in an iphone an it will work, but AT&T will detect that you are using an iphone and add the required $30 a month data plan to your bill.
AT&T and they will verify this. I just got my bill and it's on the front page saying effective 9-5-09 they can and will add a data plan to any plan that uses a smartphone.
AT&T you can use any AT&T phone with your sim card and they can tell which one you use as soon as you put it in the phone.
